On Sunday evening, Group A of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup ended strangely, as both matches ended in a scoreless draw. Mexico was facing Costa Rica in the battle for the top position, but these top sides have always had big games against each other.
It was also the battle of the Mexican Head Coaches as Javier Aguirre retook the Mexico position while Miguel Herrera was managing Costa Rica. While these games are always fun, with tons of chances for both sides, it was clear there could be no winners.
But in second half stoppage time, it looked like a wonderful goal by Santi Gimenez as he positioned himself at the far post, leaped up, and did a mid-air scissor kick to win the match, but VAR called the referee to the monitor. Gimenez did start in an offside position before the ball was played. The goal was removed, and the final whistle blew.
Between the Dominican Republic and Suriname, it was a match where national pride was on the line, as both sides were looking for bragging rights to get the win. Instead, each took home a point.
The only excitement was a VAR review when Edgar Pujol fouled his man and earned the yellow card. After the review, due to him being the last man and from behind, the card changed from yellow to red, and the Dominican Republic played with ten men the rest of the way in the match.
For the Dominican Republic, their first ever point in the Gold Cup. This is a good start for them, as we hope they continue their positive trajectory into becoming a football island, and they can now have a good working relationship with the baseball players who go to Major League Baseball.
While it's a tough group stage road for both teams who were eliminated from reaching the Quarterfinal stage, we see the quality is there, but now they must continue to build on it. But their future is bright.
