2025 Gold Cup: Curacao Rescues a point, while Honduras Wins
Group B is now becoming the group of death.
If you thought there wouldn't be any group of death in the 2025 edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, well, you were wrong. Group B, after two matches, has now shown to be a dangerous side, and both top two positions in the group for the quarterfinals are still up for grabs.
CURACAO 1:1 CANADA
It looked like Canada was going to run away with this group after their six goal clean sheet destruction over Honduras at BC Place in Vancouver. But after that match, Canada, who had led all game, dropped two points late.
Nathan Saliba scored in the 9th minute after Jacob Shaffelberg got fouled along the end line. Jayden Nelson took the free kick along the near side and got deflected by a defender. As soon as it landed, Saliba smashed it inside the near post.
After that goal, Curacao was knocking on the door, trying to get the equalizer. They thought they scored in the second half, but VAR took it away on a tight offside call. Then, a whistle from the crowd fooled the players into playing the free kick, but when it was replayed as a dropped ball, the goal was scored but waived off due to a real offside.
Finally, in second half stoppage time, Curacao got their equalizer as Joshua Zimmerman got control of the ball, passed it to Jeremy Antonisse, then, on a big run, slotted the ball inside the far post, and Curacao ripped a point away from Canada.
HONDURAS 2:0 EL SALVADOR
Honduras was looking to get itself back into this group, as it wanted to put itself into a better position after getting blitzed by Canada, conceding six goals. Their next opponent is El Salvador after their scoreless draw with Curacao.
Honduras got on the board first in the 33rd minute. Edwin Rodriguez was in the middle of the pitch when he saw Romell Quioto make a run and send a great ball in his path. As soon as he entered the area, he slotted the ball inside the near post for the lead.
Their second goal came inside second half stoppage time. Honduras defended El Salvador's corner kick at the near side. After the defender headed it away, the attackers went for goal. Yustin Arboleda passed it to Dixon Ramirez as he blew past goalkeeper Mario Gonzalez and scored into an open net.
Canada leads with four points, Honduras is in second with three points, Curacao is in third with two points, and El Salvador is in last with a single point. Tuesday, June 24th, will be a very interesting day with simulcasting going on.
