2025 Gold Cup: Panama Destroys Guadeloupe, Guatemala Upsets Jamaica
Matchday three Review of the CONCACAF Gold Cup
On the third match day of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Group C is in action as these two matches show how strong Panama looked against Guadeloupe, while Guatemala & Jamaica pulled off a ten-round fight from start to finish.
PANAMA 5:2 GUADELOUPE
Guadeloupe has always been one of the most dangerous non-FIFA sides whenever they qualify for the Gold Cup. In every edition, they always find a way to look hazardous and hungry to advance out of the group stage. This time, they ran into a buzzsaw called Panama.
In the sixth minute, Jorge Gutierez tracked the defender with the ball, blocked the pass, and then made an attacking run toward the end line. As he got to the far post, he made a quick pass to Cristian Martinez and scored into an open net.
In the 14th minute, it became two as Martinez passed the ball to the near side touchline, finding Michael Murillo. He moved up and made a nice cross to the rushing Ismael Diaz, and he scored with ease, scoring short-side inside the near post.
Then the third goal came for the Canal Boys, as Diaz got his second of the match. As the corner was delivered from the near side, the ball was deflected out and rolled to the top of the area, but Diaz ran in and smashed it home in the 17th minute.
Panama would get their fourth with the help of VAR, as the shot deflected off the hands of a Guadeloupe defender. Eduardo Guerrero took the spot kick and converted his penalty in the 22nd minute.
Guadeloupe did score two goals to get back into the match, with a beautiful bending ball that splashed the upper far 90 by Jordan Leborgne in the 29th minute. Then in the 71st minute, Florian David converted his penalty, but too little too late as Tomas Rodriguez scored in second half stoppage time.
JAMAICA 0:1 GUATEMALA
This match felt like a heavyweight boxing match, and after 90 minutes, it became one of the best matches we have seen in this Gold Cup Tournament. One goal was all that was needed, and it was fantastic.
In the 32nd minute, Guatemala had control of the ball. The ball was crossed from the near side toward the middle and in front of the area. Darwin Lom with a cheeky backheel toward Oscar Santis as he smashes it in.
From that point on, it was all defense from Guatemala. They found ways to frustrate Jamaica, to put them behind the eight ball, and they got great saves from Nicholas Hagan in net. After 90 minutes were over, Guatemala defeated Jamaica for the first time in 13 years and got the upset over the Reggae Boys.
Tomorrow, the first match days will finish with Group B.
