Another disappointing draw after a strong performance for Indy in their 1-1 draw at Sacramento.
After 90 minutes of solid defensive play and leading 1-0, one poor tackle in the box lead to a late penalty for the home side, and Indy left Sacramento with only 1 point.
For us East Standard zone folks, Indy’s visit to Sacramento was only going to have a little USL After Dark energy. Unfortunately for Indy fans, that was true last night.
The Indy Eleven went into Health Heart Park in Sacramento with a plan, bend, don’t break and be dangerous on the counter. After 90 minutes, they did just take. In the 36th minute, Elvis Amoh slotted home Aodhan Quinn’s pass from inside the box to put the visitor’s up 1-0.
Everything looked to be doing Indy’s way last night. They were defending well, being dangerous on counters, and they got themselves a massive away goal. As the team inched toward the end, Sacramento was increasing it’s attacking presence.
Then in the 4th min of injury time, Sacramento floated in a cross from the corner, and was initially dealt with but Sacramento recovered quickly and sent in another cross into the box. Indy’s defense once again was able to deal with it but this still, the ball hung around in the air inside the box. Sacramento’s Lee Desmond went for the ball while in the air, and Indy’s Edward Kizza decided to challenge the effort from behind Desmond. The result was a penalty for the home side.
Trevor Amann would then go on and score the resulting pk, getting past a frustrated Hunter Sulte (who’s looking for this first shutout from league play), and giving the home team with that seemed an improbable point. This isn’t the only time, that Indy has dropped points late in league play. Indy did just that back on April 5th vs North Carolina FC.
With the draw (this appears to be the norm for Indy this year so far…), Indy’s struggles in league play continue. The team now has four draws and only the one win at Miami - who are currently higher than Indy in the East and are a much better team then Indy’s visit to Miami in March.
Indy will continue to right the ship this upcoming weekend at El Paso. For a team with high aspirations, a mediocre season looks more and more probable by the week…
Indy’s USL Championship Record (W-D-L): 1-4-2 7 pts
Next Match: USL Championship at El Paso Locomotive (13 points) on May 16th at 9pm EST from Southwest University Park in El Paso, Texas.
