Around the World in 80 seconds: Napoli wins the title (not official, but it's done)! BVB might not thanks to dodgy officiating- why do we have VAR? Is pragmatic Pep is the best Pep?
A quick look at the Serie A, Bundesliga and Premier League top-of-table
Serie A may not be the most entertaining league in Europe, but it has been the most interesting to watch at the top. Napoli are Champions (not official yet but Lazio aren’t winning six on the trot nor are Napoli losing out), and somewhere in football heaven Diego Maradona is celebrating. But behind Napoli, the division has been filled with good, but inconsistent sides. Every time I believe Lazio are elite, they throw up a performance like today’s last 15 minutes vs Inter. Whenever I think Milan have turned a corner, they drop points, and look poor in the process. Inter’s inconsistency is mind-numbing and Atalanta alternate between spectacular and unwatchable. Roma is well just a typical Mourinho side, which is both frustrating and entertaining. Juventus are the second best team in the division in my opinion behind Napoli but obviously have a lot of distractions and external issues as a club to deal with. All of this has made Serie A very interesting.
This brings us to Germany, where Bayern have moved back top after Dortmund drew with local rivals Bochum in the most controversial of circumstances. I am not going to rehash what happened Friday, since everybody undoubtedly is familiar by this point. Human error is part of the game, and while it seems in recent years Dortmund has been the victim of many strange calls, my frustration is that all VAR seems to have done is add an additional layer of subjectivity to an already subjective process. This season it very well may have cost the Bundesliga something it needed- someone other than Bayern winning the title.
