Cruz Azul Demolishes the Vancouver Whitecaps for CONCACAF Glory
This was a no contest match in the Continental Championship Final
The continental club championship between Cruz Azul and the Vancouver Whitecaps was no contest at all. One side came to play, while the other never got started. Cruz Azul demolished the Whitecaps by a final score of five goals to nil.
It began in the first eight minutes when Cruz Azul allowed the Whitecaps to put themselves into a malaise by passing the ball around in their defensive end, and then they pounced on a poor pass. Rodolpho Rotondi intercepted the pass and found Ignacio Rivero, who blasted it in.
Cruz Azul did it again in the 28th minute. The Whitecaps put themselves into a malaise in midfield, and this time, Lorenzo Faravelli intercepted and smashed a shot off the inside of the far post, which was done.
Then, the most dangerous man on the pitch for Cruz Azul finally got his goal in the 37th minute. Rotondi attacked down the far side of the pitch and made a nice cross toward the middle, and Angel Sepulveda slid to toe poke the ball in.
Insult to injury was the former LAFC man, smashing the ball into the far upper ninety as Mateusz Bogusz terrorized his old Western Conference nemesis inside the final minute of regulation in the first half.
The goal scoring parade finally ended in the 50th minute when Sepulveda earned his brace and made the scoreline five goals to nil, and it ended that way for the rest of the match.
A total of 700 Vancouverites made the trip to watch their side attempt to make history as the first Canadian club to win a continental title, but sadly, it wasn't their night.
While they were missing Ryan Gauld due to injury and Sebastian Berhalter due to suspension on yellow card accumulation, they still had enough to make a game out of it, but unfortunately, couldn't get going.
But overall, the Whitecaps began from the first round as the Canadian Championship winners, knocking out Deportivo Saprissa, then knocking out Monterrey in the Round of 16, Pumas in the Quarterfinals, and Lionel Messi and his friends of Inter Miami in the Semi-Finals. Reaching the final is a fantastic achievement.
They have played strongly in MLS, and now the hope is they can win the Canadian Championship again to re-enter the tournament for the 2026 edition. Currently, they ended their Quarterfinal first leg away at Valour FC with a two goal draw.
But Cruz Azul are the club champions of CONCACAF in 2025, they will play in the next FIFA Club World Cup in four years’ time in 2029.
Rough weekend for Champions League Finals, I guess.
