FTL United sign landmark deal with WPLG 10
The Berkshire Hathaway-owned station is getting back onto local soccer
When I was a child, WPLG broadcast Fort Lauderdale Strikers games. Now more than 40 years later, WPLG is getting back into the local game just as they’re losing ABC affiliation after 70+ years.
The agreement, finalized in July 2025, kicks off with the 2025-26 USL Super League season, as WPLG Local 10 will become the home of the Fort Lauderdale United FC, starting with the season opener on Aug. 23, 2025, when Fort Lauderdale United FC hosts Lexington SC.
“We are beyond excited to partner with this amazing new women’s soccer franchise,” said Bert Medina, President and CEO of WPLG. “FTL United FC’s goals align perfectly with our mission to bring incredible local sports and entertainment to our viewers here in South Florida. And we have the additional opportunity to be a leader in the flourishing landscape of professional women’s sports in our region.”
“Fort Lauderdale FC is proud to announce a groundbreaking partnership with WPLG that will see our professional women’s matches, both home and away, broadcast live to fans across South Florida,” said Tommy Smith, Owner of Fort Lauderdale United FC. “This is more than just a broadcast partnership—it’s a true testament to the shared commitment between Fort Lauderdale FC and WPLG to elevate women’s sport and bring it the visibility it deserves."
Sharon Lacey, CEO of Fort Lauderdale United FC, added: “This partnership is a game changer—for the team, the fans, and the future of women’s sports in our community. Bringing these games to local airwaves not only deepens our connection with the team, it ensures that every incredible play is seen, celebrated, and shared by fans across the region."
WPLG’s first broadcast of a FTL United match will be next month.
Kartik: that's amazing that Berkshire Hathaway owns the WPLG --its the ONLY local station that Warren Buffet owns -see the link below! The article suggests that severing the link with Disney/ABC made this deal possible as it fill the void left by ABC. Any idea about the terms of the deal?
