Indy Eleven Men grab dominate win 1-0 vs Pittsburgh
Indy was winless in 8 matches, and now have won 2 in a row vs playoff contenders in quest for a playoff spot.
The Indy Eleven won once again this weekend, this time by a familiar score ling: 1-0. For the 4th time all year, the eleven have won 1-0. The Eleven are made (doesn’t mean it always go this way) to grind out 1-0 wins and Saturday’s performance vs the Pittsburgh Riverhounds followed that blueprint.
Scoring in the 45th + 3rd minute when Aodhan Quinn’s pass connected with Jack Blake to put Indy up 1-0. From there, Hunter Sulte got another shutout and Ben Ofeimu’s defensive efforts lead an unbreakable backline. Since the chaos that was the 4-4 thriller vs Hartford, McAuley’s side has really improved the last two week’s defensively. Recording shutouts in both, and winning 1-0 vs fellow playoff contenders.
The Indy Eleven had only 45% possession, but out shot Pittsburgh 9 to 4, but more importantly, had 3 shots on target compared to Pittsburgh’s 0. This defense didn’t even allow Bob Lilly’s side a chance to equalize. That’s how dominate this midfield and defense was. Hunter Sulte might have gotten the clean sheet, but he did so while not even recording a save. I can not compliment this defensive effort enough.
With these last two weeks, it has become clear: The Eleven will do good when they are solid defensively. From the 1-1 draw at Lexington, securing a 1-0 win at Birmingham for example. After yet another vital win, this is how the USL-Eastern Conference looks:
I mentioned in previous articles, June will be the most pivotal month this year, and so far the team has acquired 6 points from 6 possible.
Next Match: USL-Championship vs Las Vegas Lights (15 pts) on June 21st at 7pm EST from Michael A. Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana
