Lampard return to Chelsea makes perfect sense
Working with young players is what Chelsea needs now
Chelsea are not going to qualify for next year’s UEFA Champions League via league finish. They are not going to get relegated. I know this offends those whose narrative is that “every result matters in Europe, unlike the USA,” but Chelsea are quite honestly playing for absolutely nothing the rest of this season - BUT have huge investments in young players that need one-on-one management and must improve individually.
Few are better at individual coaching and development of high-level young players, particularly midfielders in England than Frank Lampard. The individual pieces he improved at Derby and Chelsea including Harry Wilson, Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic (whose overall game, particularly his positioning sense and timing of runs improved more under Lampard than any other manager he’s had) and Reece James speak volumes but how about his work at Everton?
Despite fighting relegation, he was able to make a completely new player out of Alex Iwobi and accelerated the development of Anthony Gordon. We even saw signs of a player finally in Tom Davies before Lampard was sacked.
