The men’s soccer program at the University of Memphis is experiencing perhaps the greatest stretch of success in program history. The Tigers made it to the NCAA Tournament in 2022, where they fell in extra time to St Louis in the first round. In 2023, they not only made it to the NCAA Tournament, they won a game for the first time in their history, defeating previously unbeaten SIU-Edwardsville in front of 1,029 fans at the Billy Murphy Track & Soccer Stadium.
Consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for a program that had only been to the NCAA Tournament twice before (1993 and 2004) is high heights indeed. Last season, the Tigers won the AAC regular season title and played host to the AAC Tournament semifinals and championship game. The Tigers have also proven quite adept at knocking off top 10 teams, having scored upset wins in three of the last four seasons.
With the recent success of the program in mind, it’s then not surprising, that the release of this Tigers schedule has been met with more excitment than in years past. Perhaps another contributing factor is the unfortunate demise and departue of Memphis 901 FC, the city’s USL Championship team, which transferred their franchise rights to Santa Barbara following their elimination form the playoffs in November. Some at the University in Memphis have expressed interest in attempting to bring in former 901 FC fans as new Tiger fans. With the Tigers men’s and women’s teams (who released their non-conference schedule earlier this summer) the only soccer in town, it would make perfect sense for former 901 FC fans to get out to South Campus and support the Tigers.

The Tigers will get things rolling in August with a trio of home exhibition games against Pearl River Community College, Central Arkansas, and Southern Indiana. They kick the regular season off up the road in Nashville against Lipscomb before returning for a two-game homestand against Belmont and Mercer.
Without a doubt the biggest game in the non-conference schedule is on the road in Chapel Hill against North Carolina. The Tar Heels are among the best programs in college soccer with NCAA Tournament appearances 16 of the last 17 seasons, nine College Cup appearances, and two National Championships (2001 and 2011). An interesting nugget for this game is that it was North Carolina who knocked Memphis out of the 2023 NCAA Tournament, a game in which the Tigers fought tooth and nail but were ultimately ground down by a score of 2-0.
Once conference play begins in late September the Tigers will face the usual suspects of UAB, Tulsa, Charlotte, FAU, Temple and USF as they look to defend their AAC regular season title. There is also a new member of the AAC in men’s soccer as Missouri State comes on board, though it’s worth noting that the Tigers have played them each of the last two years.
All home games will be played at the Billy Murphy Track & Soccer Stadium, which is soon to be renamed the Liza Wellford Fletcher Soccer & Track Stadium, where renovations began on Thursday. As a result, the capacity of the stadium will be reduced with temporary bleachers being placed on the track.
