It’s been a banner few days internationally for the women’s soccer program at the University of Memphis. The new Northern Super League in Canada kicked off their inaugural season, with seven former Memphis Tigers on opening day rosters. Not only were the Tigers well represented but it was former Tiger Tanya Boychuck who scored the winning goal for the Montreal Roses in their game against Toronto.
Today, the Tigers got another piece of recognition as Ashley Henderson was named to the 14-player squad that will represent the United States at the CONCACAF W Futsal Championship in Guatemala later this month. The US beings play on April 29 against the winner of a play-in match between Honduras and Nicaragua. Their second group game is against Costa Rica on May 1 before they finish off group play against Canada, also on May 1. The semi-finals get under way on May 3 with the final set to be played on May 4. Should the US make it to the final, the would qualify for the inaugual Women’s Futsal World Cup set to take place between November 21 and December 7 in the Philippines.
The US Futsal WNT is a very new team at US Soccer, having just been launched in 2022, and playing their first international matches in February. Ashley Henderson earned a call-up to her first camp earlier this month in Rome, Georgia where she very clearly impressed head coach Diego Burato.
Henderson, a Memphis native, will be a junior for the 2025-2026 college season after leading the Tigers last year with nine goals and three assists on her way to All-Conference Second Team.
Thanks a lot for droppin’ some knowledge on me and “connecting some dots” at the same time.
I find the NSL launch exciting. Seeing this player earn a call up is very exciting, too.
