No end in sight to Everton's woes
One of the most historic clubs in World Football spinning deeper into crisis
Few football clubs on the planet have quite the legacy of Everton Football Club. Whether it’s building and growing the domestic game, exporting it to parts outside the UK, consistently playing top flight football, or winning trophies, Everton historically is near the top. In fact, no club in the world has played more top flight season than Everton. But the club has not won a major trophy since 1995, or made a major final since 2009 - and now things are spiraling out-of-control.
Everton’s fight with relegation for a second successive season remains stunning given the financial outlay of the club since Farhad Moshiri took control in 2017. But big spending has to be done with a clear purpose, and the Moshiri reign has been plagued by a lack of professionalism, and a lack of accountability at the very top. Bill Kenwright, whose longer-term tenure running the club was propped up by David Moyes superior scouting and tactical acumen, has now been thoroughly exposed as well over-his-head in running a football club. (In fairness, many Everton supporters disliked Kenwright’s stewardship even in the Moyes era.)
