SPH Becomes Stakeholder in Miami FC, New Stadium
Miami FC won't have to play at Pitbull Stadium for much longer.
Miami FC has agreed a deal with Sports Performance Hub (SPH), changing the future of the club.
SPH has become a stakeholder of the USL Championship side. In return, MFC will become a feature of the hub and eventually move its home to Homestead, Fla.
This comes after Miami-Dade County approved a no-bid land deal where SPH can now negotiate a 99-year lease on county land.
Who is SPH?
Sports Performance Hub is a sports training and development center in south Miami-Dade. Here, former professional players train aspiring athletes using the facilities and “cutting-edge” resources.
SPH’s mission is to not only develop athletes, but to also provide its infrastructure for professional sports teams.
Darío Sala and Juan Sebastián Verón, former professional soccer players who were recently added to Miami FC’s Board, have stakes in SPH.
Sala, 50, and Verón, 49, oversee the soccer operations at SPH. Former San Antonio Spurs guard Emanuel “Manu” Ginóbili is one of the indiviuals in charge of the basketball operations.
SPH’s Plan
With Miami-Date County’s approval, the company will get over 100 acres of land.
Phase 1 of the site plan is to use 72 acres for facilities for their basketball, tennis, american football, soccer and rugby programs. The outskirts of what they call Parcel A will be used for parking.
For soccer, SPH plans to have space for an academy, a covered soccer pitch and 12 outdoor fields.
Eventually, SPH will use 35.5 acres for Parcel E, which includes student housing, a hotel, entertainment, medical facilities, parking and the stadium. The company’s goal is to build a ground that seats 10,000 people.
The stadium will have a modern design that will include club seats and luxury suites. It will be built outside the Homestead Air Reserve Base.
This upcoming campaign, Miami will remain playing its home fixtures at Pitbull Stadium at Florida International University’s campus. There is a long way to go before a date releases of when SPH’s stadium will be built.
As the Facility is built, MFC will be able to shift its training operation to SPH. That will likely happen as early as 2026.
Wow! This SPH effort seems to be towards a competitor to IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL!! What can you tell us about how IMG feels about this? To what extent might the owners of IMG try to torpedo this --or be induced to get their own USL-C franchise??
I wonder if they will rebrand the team and not call them Miami anymore.
