It’s a fashionable statement among contrarians to say that “Mauricio Pochettino never won anything at Tottenham.” While in theory true, the statement completely ignores the process and foundations by which Spurs became a contender both domestically and in Europe and may explain the impatient and reactive nature by which that foundation was completely undermined since Poch’s sacking in November 2019.
Spurs are a club that have not won a major trophy since 2008 or a domestic league title since 1961. Spurs struggles in the 1990’s and early 2000’s were corrected by the mid 2000’s by the ENIC ownership of Joe Lewis and Daniel Levy (I may do a post on ENIC in general in the future, their ownership model was revolutionary). Make no mistake about it, before they bought the club, Spurs were a basket case.
