What does Wrexham need to do this summer?

Agonizingly close to promotion, some summer fixes are needed to take the next step

Wrexham’s first season in the EFL Championship was nothing short of a resounding success even if some people thought a fourth straight promotion was likely. . Finishing 7th—just two points shy of the promotion play-off spots ( and this was before the Southampton scandal was made public, which created more fuss)—proved that Phil Parkinson’s men absolutely belong at this level and that as a manager he’s become good enough to potentially get Wrexham out of this division.

And the season saw more public appearances from Ryan Reynolds than in the past (or at least it seemed this way) who was quite the attraction at the World Cup opener for Canada.

Despite the great season, I suppose the reality is that for the first time in four years, the club won’t be celebrating a promotion over the summer. Instead, Reynolds, Rob McElhenney, and the sports science and recruitment teams face a completely different task: turning a highly competitive second-tier side into a playing unit Parkinson can guide out of this division and into the promise land of the Premier League.

To bridge that gap which on paper seems quite tiny but as history has proven for other sides requires a heavy lift and subtle changes around the edges, Wrexham’s summer rebuild needs to focus on a few critical and calculated areas. They’re not far away, but I have for years seen teams float around 7th or 8th in the table and not make that leap forward to actually achieve promotion.
