I’m not a person who particularly likes the January transfer window. I believe messing with a squad too much in January often undermines solidity within a dressing room and chemistry on the pitch. But in some cases, especially clubs facing relegation, it’s a necessary tonic.
Thus far, this January window has been the slowest in my memory - since the transfer window became a thing.
Once upon a time you could buy players into February and March which happened with some regularity before FIFA began mandating windows in each member nation. Famously, in March 1972 my club Manchester City bought Rodney Marsh from QPR while sitting on a seven point lead in the first division.
Marsh was a great player, but the chemistry didn’t work at first and Manchester City got caught by three other clubs, including Derby County under Brian Clough, who won the title. City finished fourth but only a point behind Derby, whose title propelled Clough to greatness.
