I hope USL drops the territory rights so teams like CFC can move back. The league needs more local derbies like these two. Missing story-lines that the league needs.
I think what outsiders & amateurs (not you, Aaron!)) don't understand, is that this isn't strictly about territory, but instead about what resources and resilience and empathy/reassurance you can bring to the table. If you have ALL THREE, then I'm sure the USL will find a place in their ecosystem for you. This weeds out the many posers and frauds that have blighted the growth of soccer in this country for decades. And strictly going on hate and nursing past grievances is not going to propel you to a brighter future.
For example, perhaps CFC can merge with the Red Wolves to form a USL Premier team to challenge Nashville FC of the MLS for Division 1 dominance? Or a USL Super League side based in Chattanooga can emerge from the combined energies of the CFC/Red Wolves fans and their resources? Or Red Wolves can be USL Championship and CFC can be USL League One --with an amazing Jagermeister Cup that emerges from that "Tennessee derby"?
I dont see CFC and the Red Wolves ever merging, but we would get our first true United team if that happened. They can both be at the same level and who ever has the better team gets promoted. That is what pro/rel is for. Kind of like in Munich. For years you had Bayern and 1860 but at one point 1860 Munich started sucking and now they play in the 3.Liga. Sucks for them but that is a missed Derby in Munich.
Thank you for breaking this down. Really appreciate it, as this kind of thinking can get lost in the midsts of all the other items in the North American football news. Big picture stuff matters. Keep up the good work!
Chattanooga Red Wolves versus CFC in April will be a banner test of this USL versus MLS NP warz!
