Fully agree that doing work on a local team or teams is hugely beneficial when starting out. Most of those teams are glad of the extra coverage, so more likely to give access to players, coaches, training, front office, etc., which gives a really good grounding for interviews and reporting. This then makes it a lot easier if or when you start covering higher-profile teams or national teams. (Sometimes the local club can already be high profile) Though the industry can feel like it's more difficult than ever to get into or get full/part-time work in, newsletter platforms make it a lot easier to do things like this via your own outlet. People are also more likely to pay for in-depth coverage of their team that they can't get anywhere else.
